An Overview on UPSC CDS 2017:

The "Combined Defence Services" Examination (CDS) is conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment into the Indian Military Academy, officers Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy and Indian Air Force Academy. The Notification for the examination is usually released in the months of October and June, and the exams are conducted in February and November respectively. Only unmarried graduates are eligible to sit for the exam. Successful candidates are admitted into the respective Academies after an interview conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB).

Candidates qualifying the written test are interviewed by the Service Selection Board and if finally selected, depending upon the choice given by the candidates and their merit list ranking, are sent to one of the following institutes for orientation training:

  • Indian Military Academy, Dehradun
  • Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala
  • Air Force Academy,  Hyderabad
  • Officers Training Academy, Chennai
  • Officers  Training  Academy, Chennai 21st SSC Women (Non- Technical)

[Women candidates are eligible for OTA (Officers  Training  Academy, Chennai) only]

Those joining the first three institutes get permanent commission. Cadets passing out of Officers Training Academy get short service commission.

Applicants are required to mention their preferences while filling up the application forms.

UPSC CDS 2017 Important Dates

UPSC CDS 2017 Exam is conducted in two sessions throughout the year.

Combined Defence Services Examination (I):

  • Application Form Notification: 9th of November.
  • Date of Upload of the form: 8th of November.
  • Last Date for Receipt of Applications: 2nd of December.
  • Date of Examination: 5th of February.

Combined Defence Services Examination (II):

  • Application Form Notification: 16th of July.
  • Date of Upload of the form: 15th of July.
  • Last Date for Receipt of Applications: 12th of August.
  • Date of Examination: 23rd of October.

UPSC CDS 2017 Eligibility

The following is the Eligibility Criteria for UPSC CDS Exam:

  • Nationality: A candidate must be:
    • A citizen of India.
    • A subject of Bhutan.
    • A subject of Nepal.
    • A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India.
    • A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories 2, 3, 4 and 5 above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.
Certificate of eligibility will not, however, be necessary in the case of candidates who are Gurkha subjects of Nepal.

  • Education Qualification:
    • For IMA /OTA: A degree from a recognized University or equivalent.
    • For Indian Naval Academy:  Bachelor of Engineering.
    • For Air Force Academy: Degree of a recognised University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10 +2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.
  • Age Requirements:
    • For IMA: Unmarried male candidates between 19-24 years on 1st January or 1st July of the year succeeding the year of examination i.e. born not earlier than 2nd January 1995 and not later than 1st January 2000 only eligible.
    • For Indian Naval Academy: Unmarried male candidates between 19-22 years on 1st January or 1st July of the year succeeding; the year of examination
      i.e. born not earlier than 2nd January 1995 and not later than 1st January 2000 only eligible.
    • For Air Force Academy: Unmarried male candidates between 20-24 years on 1st January or 1st July of the year succeeding the year of examination
      i.e. born not earlier than 2nd January 1995 and not later than 1st January 2000 only eligible.
    • For Officers Training Academy (SSC Course for men):  Male candidates (married or unmarried) between 19-25 years on 1st January or 1st July of the year succeeding the year of examination  i.e. born not earlier than 2nd January 1994 and not later than 1st January 2000 only eligible.
    • For  Officers  Training  Academy (SSC Women Non-Technical Course): Unmarried women, issueless widows who have not remarried and issueless divorcees (in possession of divorce documents) who have not remarried are eligible.

UPSC CDS 2017 Application Process

Application Process for UPSC CDS:

  • Candidates can apply online on the official webiste of the UPSC CDS exam. i.e, www.upsconline.nic.in
  • Candidates must make sure that the application form of UPSC CDS is complete when submitted.
  • The applicants who are submitting multiple applications should note that only the applications with higher RID (Registration ID) shall be entertained by the commission and fee paid against one RID shall not be adjusted against any other RID.
  • The eligible candidates shall be issued an e-Admission Certificate three weeks before the commencement of the examination.
  • The Admit Card will be available to download from the official website of UPSC CDS exam. Candidates must make sure that no admit card will be sent via post.

UPSC CDS 2017 Application Form Details

Application Form Details for UPSC CDS Exam:

  • Candidates will have to visit the official website of UPSC CDS.
  • Find the application form and fill the form according to the instructions.
  • Make sure that the submitted details are correct.
  • Upload the scanned copy of the Passport Sized Photograph.
  • Next step is to pay the Application Fee via online banking.

UPSC CDS 2017 Admit Card

  • Availability of Admit Card: The eligible candidates will receive the Admit Card three weeks before the exam. Candidates can download the Admit Card once it is available on the official website.
  • Provide valid details of E-Mail ID while registration as the may use it to contact the candidates.
  • Note: Candidates will not receive Admit Card via post.

UPSC CDS 2017 Exam Pattern

UPSC CDS Exam is conducted in three papers. The details of the papers can be found below:

  • Paper 1 - English: 
    • Number of Questions: 120
    • Duration: 2 hours
    • Marks: 100
  • Paper 2 - General Knowledge:
    • Number of Questions: 120
    • Duration: 2 hours
    • Marks: 100
  • Paper 3 - Elementary Mathematics:
    • Number of Questions: 100
    • Duration: 2 hours
    • Marks: 100

Elementary Mathematics is not required for admission to Officers Training Academy (OTA).

There will be four sets of question booklet namely A, B, C and D. Candidates will get question booklet randomly.

UPSC CDS 2017 Results

  • Results for UPSC CDS is declared in two stages. 
    • First, UPSC declares the written exam result.
    • Final Result is out once SSC interview procedure is finished.
  • Aspirants should secure minimum required marks to get shortlisted for the next round of the selection process.

For admission, candidates have to qualify in interview round. All candidates will also be required to submit their original documents in support of their age and educational qualification before the last date.

The original Certificates are to be submitted within two weeks of completion of the SSB Interview and not later than 13th November 2017.

UPSC Commission will release the marks list of the exam within fifteen days from the date of publication of the final results.

Candidates can download the marks sheet within 60 days from the day it was put up.

UPSC CDS 2017 Counselling

  • Candidates who cleared written exam of UPSC CDS are then called for an interview by Service Selection Board(SSB).
  • SSB Interview lasts for a week. Air Force academy candidates(Only those who have applied for flying branch)are tested for PABT. After these tests, candidates undergo the medical examination before finally admitted into the above-mentioned academies, and after successful completion of training, they are inducted into the armed forces.
  • SSB follows “trait theory” system of selection. Which assumes that every leader must have some specific and pre-determined leadership traits.
  • The present system of selection, although is long and takes four to five days, is thus based on an objective assessment of each candidate in which the qualities like initiative, alertness, judgement, courage, physical fitness endurance, cooperation, group planning, decisiveness, knowledge, etc. are judged.

How do i apply for the UPSC CDS 2017 EXAM?

Candidates are required to apply online only using the link www.upsconline.nic.in click here to apply
The applicants are advised to submit only single application, however if due to any unavoidable situation, if he/she submits another/multiple applications, then he/she must ensure that application with the higher RID (Registration ID) is complete in all respects like applicants’ details, examination centre, photograph, signature, fee etc
The applicants who are submitting multiple applications should note that only the applications with higher RID (Registration ID) shall be entertained by the commission and fee paid against one RID shall not be adjusted against any other RID.
Candidates are not required to submit alongwith their applications any certificate in support of their claims regarding age, educational qualifications, SC/ST/OBC and fee remission etc.
The eligible candidates shall be issued an e-Admission Certificate three weeks before the commencement of the examination
The e-Admission Certificate will be made available in the UPSC website www.upsc.gov.in for downloading by candidates. No admission certificate will be sent by post
