Introduction:

What is GATE?

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India entrance Examination is conducted by the collaboration seven IIT's( (IITs at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) and IISc, every year and has emerged as one of the principle tests for engineering and science aptitude. The GATE score/Rank is used for admissions to Post Graduate Programmes (ME, M.Tech, MS, direct Ph.D.) in IISc, IITs and other prestigious Universities. During the last few years, GATE score is also being used as one of the criteria for recruitment in Government Organizations such as Cabinet Secretariat, and National/State Public Sector Undertakings in India. A few such organizations that use GATE scores are Indian Oil Corporation Limited, National Thermal Power Corporation, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation and Power Grid Corporation etc

  • GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is one of the most preferred examinations for engineering students for higher studies as well as for some Govt jobs.
  • Biometric information (Photograph and Fingerprints) of the candidates may be captured before the start of the examination.
  • The Application forms for GATE 2018 Exam commence on 1st September 2017 till 5th October 2017.
  • The GATE exam will be conducted by an ONLINE Computer Based Test (CBT).
  • A candidate can appear only in any one paper of the GATE examination.
  • The questions are fundamental, concept based and thought provoking.
  • GATE exam shall also hold examinations for candidates in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates.
  • GATE is conducted on a yearly basis for those willing to enroll into the post-grad engineering institutes across India.
  • The GATE examination is usually conducted by either the IISc or IIT institutes.
  • For GATE 2018, it is IIT Roorkee that is set to conduct the GATE examination in February 2018.
  • The GATE score is evaluated by a number of public sector institutions for picking candidates for their varied job opportunities as well.

Important Notes

  • GATE requires preparation at a level where students can understand the basics and excel at the entrance test. That is where Reference Books come into the picture. 
  • The next section students can look into is sample papers and previous years question papers, which is always helpful. 
  • There are certain colleges that accept GATE score. There are various subjects that students can choose from.

GATE 2018 Important Dates

  • The last date for change of examination city for GATE 2018 will be the 16th of November.
  • The GATE 2018 Admit Card will be available from the 5th January 2018.
  • The GATE 2018 exam will be held on 3rd February 2018, 5th, 11th till 11th February 2018 in two sessions, morning and afternoon and the Results will be available on the 17th March 2018.

GATE 2018 Eligibility

  • Candidates who have a Bachelors Degree in B.Tech/B.E/B.Pharm/B.Arch/B.Sc from a recognized university is eligible for GATE 2018. However, there is no upper limit on age.
  • Candidates having a Masters Degree in Mathematics/Science/Computer/Statistics are also eligible for GATE 2018.
  • Final year students of qualifying exam are eligible for GATE 2018 provided they get a certificate from their college principal. On passing the qualifying exam, students must submit their Degree Certificate or Provisional certificate else they will not be eligible.
  • Diploma Holders are not eligible for GATE exam.

GATE 2018 Application Process

  • The application process for GATE 2018 is online. The form can be filled via GATE Online Application Processing System.
  • The required details in the form must be filled up after the candidate registers themselves.
  • After the required details are filled, the candidate must check the details before submission of form as forms which are submitted cannot be changed.
  • Once the form is submitted, students must pay the application fee through net banking, e-challan or debit card.
  • Students are required to check the application status on a regular basis for 1 of 6 categories like accepted, received, rejected etc.

GATE 2018 Application Form Details

  • The application fee is Rs.1500 and Rs.750 based on the candidate's category.
  • There are 23 papers for GATE 2018. Candidates can appear for only one paper depending on the discipline of their qualifying degree.
  • Hence, students must be careful while choosing the paper.

GATE 2018 Admit Card

  • The GATE admit card is an important document which must be carried to the exam centre, failing which, the candidate will not be allowed to enter the exam hall. It contains details like candidate's name, application number, date of examination, exam centre etc.
  • The GATE admits card can be downloaded from the official website by filling in the ID and password. The admit card is downloadable in PDF format and it must be preserved till the admission process.
  • Candidates must carry a valid ID along with the admit card to the exam centre.
  • Candidates are advised to check the details in the admit card and discrepancies if any must be brought to the notice of the concerned authority.

GATE 2018 Exam Pattern

  • There are 65 objective type questions and it carries 100 marks. Question 1 to 25 carries 1 mark each, Question 26 to 55 carries 2 marks each and Question 56 to 65 carries 15 marks.
  • Every correct answer will fetch the candidate 1 or 2 marks depending on the section. There is negative marking for incorrect answers. However, there is no negative marking for unattended questions as well as numerical questions.
  • The Engineering Mathematics will carry around 15% of the total marks.
  • The General Aptitude section will carry 15% of the total marks.
  • There is NO negative marking for numerical answer type questions.
  • GATE contains two different types of questions, being Multiple choice Questions where there will be four choices to choose from (MCQ) and Numerical Answer Question which will be without any choices.
  • Candidates will be provided with a virtual calculator for the exam.
  • Each candidate will be provided with a scribble pad for rough work. The scribble pad has to be returned after the examination.

GATE 2018 Syllabus

  • Syllabus for CSE: Engineering Mathematics, Digital Logic, Programming and Data Structures, Theory of computation and Databases.
  • Syllabus for Civil: Engineering Mathematics, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Geomatics Engineering.
  • Engineering Mathematics syllabus: This section comprises of arithmetical questions and Engineering mathematics. The main aim is to test the applicant’s ability to understand complex concepts of mathematics involved in Engineering with ease and their application to problems.
  • Applied Mechanics and Design syllabus

GATE 2018 Results

  • The GATE 2018 results will be out on 17th March 2018 at 5 Pm and can be checked on the official website by filling in the required details.
  • The GATE scores are valid for 3 years.
  • The GATE score card will be available after the results are out. It can be downloaded by candidates (all categories) who secured marks more than the qualifying marks.

GATE 2018 Counselling

  • There is no common process for counselling. It depends on individual institute and usually varies from one institute to another.
  • However, candidates are requested to carry their GATE 2018 scorecard, ID card, application receipt for fee, engineering academic records, mark sheets of board exams, SC/ST certificate and PWD category certificate.

The eligibility criteria for taking admissions to an M.Tech program is you have to complete graduation in the specific field. And the entrance exam for taking admission for M.Tech is GATE exam. You will have to qualify the GATE exam. Typical cutoff for civil engineering is a rank under 29.

Eligibility Criteria and Admission Process:

The eligibility criteria for doing M.Tech Automotive Engineering in NIT Agartala should be a BE/B.Tech pass out in either Mechanical or Automobile Engineering. GATE is the required exam to get admission in M.Tech. The typical GATE cutoff ranges from 500 and above for Gen category and 350and above for other categories.

The eligibility criteria for Btech is that you should have completed diploma or 12th class examination. After completing B.tech GATE entrance exam is carried out for Electrical Engineering the cutoff is about 75% to 80%.

Not to worry at it a process only. Candidates have to wait. Your GATE application form will go through a process named scrutiny. During this process, the GATE 2018 office would check your application form. If there will be no mistake then the status message will soon be changed to be accepted.

No Ashwin you are not eligible to apply GATE 2018. Candidates who are currently in final year of B.Sc (Bachelor of Science) course first needs to complete M.Sc (Master of Science) course just after completing B.Sc. Then they are eligible for the GATE entrance examination.

Don't worry, Yes you can apply for the GATE 2018 examination. But if you want to use GATE 2018 score to get admission in any college again then you would get to the first-year admission in M.Tech course. So in this way, you would lose your current years which you are studying in M.Tech.

Not to worry if you don't have any online payment process. If you select the e-Challan option, then you will have to print the generated Challan and will have to go to a branch of the State Bank of India and pay the application fee.

  • Passport
  • PAN Card
  • Voter ID
  • Aadhaar-UID
  • College ID

The GATE exam is organized jointly by 7 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institute of Science (IIs) Bangalore. However, every year, one of these institutes holds the sole authority to set regulations of the exam and to declare the results. The eight zones include:

Category certificate is required only to decide the rate of the application fee. As far as the GATE 2018 examination is concerned, only SC/ST/PwD candidates and all women candidates qualify for a reduced fee. That is the purpose of asking for the certificate.

Yes, Yogesh you can change the GATE examination city after submitting the application form. For this, you have to pay a Fee for INR 400/- to be paid online using GOAPS.

Request for changing GATE examination city will be accepted till 20th November, 2017.
