GMAT 2017 Exam Pattern

Mode of GMAT Exam: GMAT is a computer based exam which is held at a test centre chosen by the Candidate.

Duration of Exam: The duration of the GMAT examination is 3.5hours, but it stretches to 4 including the breaks.

Marking Scheme for GMAT Exam: The scoring pattern for GMAT is unique, and the secret to the Pearson organisation. When you answer a question correctly, the subsequent questions become tougher and tougher. If you answer it incorrectly, the subsequent question is easier. The student is marked not by the number of questions you got right, but for the level of difficulty you could hit.

Marks Alotted: According to a survey, the overall GMAT Score ranges from around 200 to 800 which measures performance on the quantitative and verbal sections jointly. Thus, the performance on the Analytical Writing Assessment and the Integrated Reasoning sections count separately. The GMAT score of Verbal and Quantitative ranges from 0 to 60. An average GMAT score lies between 9 to 45 in verbal and 7 to 50 for quantitative. Verbal and Quantitative scores cannot be compared to each other but can be compared across all GMAT test Administrations. GMAT is an adaptive test, which means if you answer a question correctly, the next question will be more difficult than the last one. And so on and so forth. The candidate is ranked as per the numbers of answers he gets right, as well as their difficulty level, and the time taken on each GMAT Exam section. If a candidate answers a lot of questions incorrectly in a row, then his GMAT score has a significant chance of dipping. There is a complicated, patented algorithm in place to assign the GMAT scores, that nobody quite knows. The GMAT score will also decrease notably with every unanswered question.

Exam Paper Sections: The GMAT exam consists of four sections mainly:

  • Analytical Writing Assessment: 30 Minutes, 01 Question, 0-6 Scoring range.
  • Integrated Reasoning: 30 Minutes, 12 Questions, 1-8 Scoring range.
  • Quantitative: 75 Minutes, 37 Questions, 0-60 Scoring range.
  • Verbal: 75 Minutes, 41 Questions, 0-60 Scoring range.

Tushar MISM, batch of 2016
09 Nov 2016
Eligibility Criteria and Admission Process:

The first thing that you should know about a reputed college in the USA is that there are no fixed criteria.  I took the GRE but the college also accepts GMAT

I was enrolled in a Masters program called MISM - Master of Information Systems Management. There are three potential choices within MISM

1) 12-month track (For people with 3+ years of experience - Starts in May)

2) 16-month track (For people with less than 3 years experience - Starts in August). This is exactly same as the 12-month track, except one criterion - It has a mandatory internship

3) 16- Month Data Analytics track - Concentration on Data Analytics (However, it's fine even if you don't get into this track because you can choose your electives to suit data analytics)

IMPORTANT : While applying , you can choose which track you're interested in , however , your application will be considered for all 3 tracks

Other things to note:

The application requires you to upload a 1-minute self-introduction video.

GRE score : 318 + (Fair chance)  but 325 + (SAFE)

TOEFL : 110 should be safe

It's good to have some certifications in your kitty. For example, if you're interested in analytics to try to get SQL/SAS certified. Do some online R courses and have those certifications as well. It really helps!!

The admission procedure is simple. You need to give an entrance examination like the GRE or GMAT along with TOEFL (If you are an international student) and apply on their website by the application deadline
  • The typical cutoff for Computer science in Boston University was around 318 for GRE and around 95-100 for TOEFL.
