Application Form, Dates, Syllabus and Pattern of NIFT 2018 Entrance Exam

  • The National Institute Of Fashion Technology (NIFT) was set up in the year 1986 under the aegis of Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
  • NIFT has 16 campuses spread across India.
  • The main aim of establishing NIFT is to provide quality education to all the fashion aspirants in India.
  • NIFT conducts NIFT Entrance Exam to select a list of deserving aspirants for the undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Fashion.
  • NIFT 2018 Entrance Exam is scheduled on February 2nd, 2018.
  • The candidates can only fill the Application Form online and the fee can also be paid either through online payment modes or in the form of a Demand Draft (DD).
  • NIFT 2018 Entrance Exam is an offline exam with two parts; a General Ability Test (GAT) and a Creative Ability Test (CAT). 
  • Candidates who are willing to apply for the NIFT Entrance Examination should fulfil the eligibility criteria mentioned in the official NIFT website.

 Undergraduate Courses offered by NIFT:

  • Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) in Accessory Design, Fashion Design, Fashion Communication, Knitwear Design, Textile Design, Leather Design
  • Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B.F.Tech) in Apparel Production

 Post-Graduate Courses offered by NIFT:

  • Master of Design (M.Des) – Design Space
  • Master of Fashion Management (M.F.M)

    Application Forms :

  • The candidates have to apply for the exam through online application form only.
  • The eligible candidates can apply for the exam through the official website of the NIFT.
  • Aspiring candidates have to first register themselves  and later login to fill the application form through the link in the official website
  • The candidates require scanned copies of photograph and signature while filling the application form.
  • The registered candidates have to access the official website for notifications and updates on the Important dates of the exam.

    Syllabus :

  • Since the exam consists of three exam rounds, i.e, General ability test ( GAT ), Creative ability test (CAT) and Situation test, the syllabus for the three tests are as follows
  • General ability test includes the topics such as Quantitative ability, Logical ability, General awareness, English comprehension, and vocabulary.
  • Creative ability test includes design ability, discernment ability, and others.
  • Situation test is based on the performance of the candidate in the previous two test which tests the ability of the candidate to handle a specific scenario with a particular material.

Rounds in NIFT Entrance Exam 2018:

Candidates who have qualified in the NIFT entrance exam should also clear the following rounds:

  • Situation Test for candidates applying for B. Des course in NIFT and
  • Group Discussion (GD)/Personal Interview (PI) for candidates seeking admission in Masters in Fashion Technology (M. F Tech.), Masters in Fashion Management (MFM) and Masters in Design (M. Des) at NIFT.


  • Candidates for B.F. Tech will be selected on the basis of GAT score.
  • NIFT 2018 Results would be declared in the Final week of May/June-2018.
  • The NIFT 2018 counselling process would commence from June 2018.
  • The NIFT sessions would start from late July / early August onwards.

NIFT Entrance Exam 2018 Reservation of Seats:

Seats in NIFT are reserved for different categories on the basis of the following criteria:

 Seat allocation for Foreign Candidates in NIFT:

  • A total of 15% supernumerary seats is reserved for Foreign Nationals in each program at NIFT Delhi, NIFT Mumbai, NIFT Kolkata, NIFT Bengaluru, NIFT Chennai, NIFT Hyderabad, NIFT Gandhinagar and NIFT Raebareli.
  • Therefore, 5 seats are reserved for Foreign Nationals (whether residing in India or Abroad) and NRI at NIFT, who are citizens of India and hold an Indian passport and have temporarily migrated to another country for the past 6 months or more for work, residence or any other purpose.
  • The admission to NIFT programs for Foreign Nationals/NRI Candidates would be conducted on basis of following examinations.
Bachelor Programme (B.Des & B.FTech) of NIFT SAT-1 Score
Masters Programme (MFM) of NIFT GMAT Score
Master Programme (M.Des & M.FTech) of NIFT GRE Score
  • Foreign candidates will be allocated their campus or program in NIFT on the basis of their scores in the merit list.
  • They have the flexibility to opt for as many SAT / GMAT  / GRE tests before April 30, 2018.
  • Such candidates who are seeking admission under the Foreign Nationals and NRI category in NIFT have to apply through the official NIFT website.
  • The last date to apply in NIFT would be in the month of April.
  • They also need to obtain equivalent certificates of their foreign degrees from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi, prior to admission in NIFT.
  • A Special NRI Test would be conducted for admission to seats reserved under NRI quota.
  • Candidates having Common Merit Rank (CMR) as well as fresh candidates can apply for the NIFT test, subject to fulfilment of academic and documentation requirements.
  • The NIFT Test/Interview would be conducted at New Delhi Center.

 Admission Procedure in NIFT (State Domicile Category):

  • The state domicile of a candidate is the place from where he/she has completed his Class 12th/graduation/qualifying degree.
  • NIFT provides for 6 supernumerary seats i.e. 20% seats in addition to the 30 seats are reserved for the candidates who belong to the following states:

  • To avail this category, the candidates need to furnish a certificate from the school/college.
  • For Distance Learning candidates, the domicile status would be determined by the State of the regular school which he/she has regularly attended.
  • Candidates would have the option to take admission under General/SC/ST/OBC category as per merit in any course/campus of their preference, irrespective of their state of domicile.
  • It is important to reiterate that reserved category candidates can also apply for the domicile seats.
  • If availed, these domicile seats would be offered to the children or wards of NRIs as per merit basis during the counselling process of the NIFT.

NIFT 2018 Important Dates

  • Online registration: The NIFT online application process will generally commence in 2nd November 2017 
  • Last date of online registration. The last date of online registration without late fee is 10th January 2018. However, the last date of online registration with late fee is 16th January.
  • Availability of admit card: The admit card will be made available from 5th February 2018  onwards.
  • NIFT exam date: The NIFT exam will be held on 12th February 2018.
  • Situation test/GD/ Interview for NIFT: The NIFT situation test/group discussion/interview will usually take place in the month of April and May.
  • NIFT result date: The NIFT results are usually declared on 2nd June 2018.
  • Counseling session: The counselling sessions are usually in 13th June 2018.

Eligibility Criteria for UG programs:

  • Eligibility Criteria for Bachelor of Design: The applicant should not cross 23 years of age as on 1st October 2016. However, there is a relaxation of 5 years on the maximum age limit for SC/ST/ Physically handicapped persons. The candidate should have passed 12th grade from a recognized board in order to be eligible for NIFT exam.
  •  board with Physics and Chemistry as their subjects. Candidates holding a diploma certificate of 3 to 4 years in Engineering, recognized by AICTE will also be eligible for B.FTech.

Eligibility Criteria for PG programs:

  • Eligibility Criteria for M.Des: The candidate must hold a minimum of 3 years diploma in Undergraduate design from NIFT/NID or they must possess an Undergraduate degree from a recognized institute.
  • Eligibility Criteria for M.F.M: The candidate must hold a minimum of 3 years Undergraduate diploma from NIFT/NID or they must possess an Undergraduate degree from a recognized institute.
  • Eligibility Criteria for M.F.Tech: The candidate must hold a B.Tech/B.E from a recognized institute or a B.F.Tech from NIFT.

NIFT 2018 Application Process

  • Candidates can fill application form of NIFT from the first week of November 2018 to the second week of January 2018.
  • The application fee of NIFT 2018  has to be paid through online payment gateway or through bank demand draft issued in favour of “NIFT HO” payable at New Delhi.
  • Fee for General/OBC (Non-Creamy) Category- INR 1500 through payment gateway or demand draft.
  • Fee for SC/ST/PHP Category- INR 750 through payment gateway or Demand Draft.
  • Candidates applying for NIFT 2018 through demand draft are required to send the printout of the NIFT 2018 application form, duly completed in all respect, along with the demand draft to the following address:

  • Mode of Application: The mode of application for NIFT is online. Applicants must go on the NIFT official website in order to register for the exam.
  • Application fee: The NIFT application fee is INR 1,500 for General/OBC candidates. For SC/ST/PHP candidates, the application fee is INR 750. In case of online registration with the late fee, it would amount to INR 5,000.
  • Mode of Payment of application fee: The application fee can be paid either online or through Demand Draft.

  • The candidates must click on the link mentioned in the email in order to download the admit card.
  • The next step is to log into the user account using the link.
  • Further, the candidate must click on the link to download the admit card and a PDF format of the NIFT admit card will be generated.
  • The NIFT admit card must be printed and kept for future use.

Details in NIFT admit card: 

  • The NIFT admit card will contain details like name of the candidate, roll number. application number etc.

Guidelines regarding admit card: 

  • Candidates must ensure that their details on the admit card are correct.
  • In case of any discrepancies, the candidate must contact the concerned authority.
  • The admit card will not be sent by post, hence the candidates must download the admit card from the official website.
  • Candidates must carry the NIFT admit card along with a valid photo ID to the exam centre failing which the candidate will not be allowed to enter the exam hall.

NIFT 2018 Exam Pattern

  • Main Purpose: This is the process where you get to know the scenario and the Blue Print of the exam pattern.
  • Exam Pattern:  It consists of different section and details about the mode of examination and questions pattern for NIFT 2018.
  • The NIFT exam is in offline mode.
  • The exam has 2 parts i.e GAT and CAT.
  • The exam will be held for 2 hours and it will contain 150 questions.
  • Shortlisted candidates for NIFT B.Des from the written entrance examination are required to take a situation test.
